Getting around

what are my options to get places?

You can walk, take a safari (open air taxi), take the bus, or buy a car. The hills are too steep to ride a bike. If you live anywhere from supreme corner down you will absolutely need a car.

taxi's aka safari's

These are your taxi options on island. You can get one from the ferry dock in cruz bay, hail one driving by or possibly use their phone number and call them. They have set prices posted per person in the back window.

can I buy a car?

Buying a car is not easy. The options are slim and just like housing you will have to find them by asking around or looking on certain facebook groups. The "island" cars are usually really beat up and have a lot of mechanical issues. The automatic transmissions are tortured with these hills. Be vary cautious with buying on the islands.

can I buy a car in the states or ship mine?

If you plan on being on the island I recommend shipping your car down or buying one from miami and shipping it. Its approx $1200- $1500 to ship it down. You will have to pay fees upon getting it here and registration is supposedly tough. If your car was made outside the US you will have to pay a fee of 10% of the value.

hitchhiking is safe?

For the most part yes. And its much easier than walking. When you're lucky to get a ride it will save you a ton of time. Just point your finger toward the ground and the direction you want to head. Avoid the random drunk person or weirdo and you should be good. Riding in the back of the truck is actually pretty fun.

can I take the bus?

The bus is only $1 and it runs to a few spots on the island. The schedule is not reliable and I have rarely seen it come or leave on time.
